Today ends eight years of routine for me. Way back in 1999, yep before you were born, I took a job with a small real estate firm to help them with a hardware/software conversion. Today ends that long journey.
Over the course of that first year I worked for them, we completed the conversion and it looked as if I would be moving on. When the job was completed, the head of one of the departments asked if I could stay on and oversee all up coming special projects. This was to include the companies first website along with some internal marketing. I agreed.
Time passed and my contract with the company was renewed, altered, laughed at and re-evaluated, but I kept on working learning new job skills and making new friends.
My experiences with this company gave me the know how and courage to to start my own computer/tech consulting business. Using the contacts I made through the company to get my new business off the ground. All the while keeping them as my first and biggest client.
The road over the last eight years has been bumpy. The market has gone up and down and back again. In the last year the company has fallen on some harder times. They have lost some key business and assets, which has lead to some down sizing.
Last month, I was asked by the President to change my capacity with the company and to draw up new terms and a new contract in 30 days. Which I did. Many things changed, less time, money for me and some much needed savings for them. It comes out as a wash in the end for me. I have freed up more time to seek more business, if I so desire, and I get to keep a client I really enjoy.
Over the years I have had many conversations with my good friends about starting new chapters in our lives. How it can be helpful to start new and to take a new approach. I am hoping that this is the case with this shift in my life. Who knows what the future has in store. I know that the last eight years have been good to me. I am looking forward to the next eight years being even better!
