Good news for bloggers the world over. Last week Google, who bought Feedburner a couple of months ago, announced that the paid services for Feedburner will now be free.

I am currently running all of our blogs and video podcasts through Feedburner and I love the service. When I read this I was jumping for joy. One less thing I have to pay for each month. If you have a blog or podcast and you are not using this service, stop reading and go there now. It is a very usefully tool for tracking stats on the interenets.

The boys who brought you Dig are looking to take on our dear old friend Twitter with a new micro blogging application called Pownce.  It works basically the same way Twitter does, with a few extras.  Same “what are you doing” architecture, tell your homies what up. The layout style with Pownce allows you a bit more customization allowing you to change the look a bit more than Twitter.  Pictures and Files can change hands along with the ability to group contacts.  This of course is just what I have read, I have yet to secure an invite.  I guess what I am saying is, um… can you send me an invite?  The one big draw back that is evident, even to someone who has yet to get an invite, is you can not update through SMS.  No mobile update mean you never leave the house.  Which works for me because I am almost always at home.  But the rest of America might find this problematic?  Standing in a night club with my laptop is just not going to get me the chicks?

Now here is a great mash up!  Gophernow is a simple google maps mash that lets you enter your address and then gives you a map and list of restaurants that are open right now.  This is such a great idea that it seems strange that it has taken someone this long to mash this data.  Not only does it give you restaurants in your area that are open and serving it also lets you know who is delivering.  This will be handy to have when you are in a unfamiliar city and looking for food, late!

Would have come in handy last week when looking for late night food.

Sk*rt is a Digg like website for women of the web.  Instead of covering the world of tech, internet and all things computers.  Sk*rt focus more on things chics dig like shopping, hair, shoes and makeup.  It is social just like digg, meaning you can post a story of your interest and then get people to vote it up to the front page.  The interaction right now is small due to low traffic, but I think this is such a great idea it is bound to take off!  The pretty site design, ease of use and pointed content should help to boost this website to fame, fortune and nice new pair of shoes!  Plus where else are you going to find a cool quiz on, “what sex is your brain“.

If you read the title and do not know what Twitter is or does, you may be a bit out of the loop. I wrote a post on Twitter a couple of weeks ago that might help you understand. Then again it may confuse you even more, I some times have that effect.

I have provided a link to an MSNBC article that talks about Twitter being that new fangled application that the kids are using. That like everything else that is new and hip, it has a hard time being adopted by the generation before it. Which I think is total bullshit, most of my twitter friends are from the generation before last. It is an interesting take on the 140 word, micro blogging fade, but I am not sure how well it was thought out or researched. Just like this blog. ;)

Twitter Nation

Those of you on the fringe of e-ciety may be a little lost when you here someone say, “he twittered it.” So just what the hell is Twitter, and what does it mean to “twitter” something.

Twitter is the buzz word of 2007, especially if you are involved in “new media”. Founded in October of 2006 it was low profile until the company sponsored this years SWSX conference in Austin. I had been playing around with it on and off but it wasn’t until this event that it became something I was using everyday. You ask, “what is this thing I am using every day?” Well, I often think it is easy to explain to people, but it is not. It’s not easy because it is a hard concept, because it is not.  Just that most people are not keen to the terms or use of this web app. Here is what Wikipedia says about it.

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, the Twitter website, or an application such as Twitterrific.

See what I am saying. If you were my mother, thank god you are not, would you understand a word of that description? Here is how I tell people about it. Twitter is a way to stock your friends/family/strangers and for them to stock you. Twitter asks one simple question, “what are you doing?” This seems like a question we could all answer. Twitter makes it simple to keep people up to date on you. There are handful of ways to archive this through twitter, first and the easiest is to simply txt message your twitter home page from your mobile phone, you can update directly on the internet page, you can also use an instant message client of your choice, and if those don’t fit your fancy there is a new app. being produced everyday to assist you on updating your twitter page.

Now after that brief overview, if I am near a computer I will give them tour.  This then almost always solicits the response, “that is dumb” or “why do I want people to know what I am doing?” Without fail two or three days later I get an invite from them.

So what is Twitter and why should you be a friend of mine? Micro blogging is fun and easy and is the future. It takes little to no time and can be done from a handful of devices. It allows you to stay in contact with your friends around the world on a daily basis. Oh, and you can stock those people on the interweb you would normally never have the chance to.
